Zelnorm is a prescription drug for the short-term treatment of women with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with constipation, and for patients younger than 65 years old with chronic constipation. Introduced in 2002, the drug was withdrawn from the market in March 2007 after study results showed an excess number of serious cardiovascular adverse events, including heart attacks, stroke and angina in patients taking Zelnorm compared to patients given placebo.

Zelnorm works by increasing the activity of serotonin in the intestines, which speeds the movement of stools through the bowels. Common side effects noted during Zelnorm use include an increased risk for heart attack, stroke, chest pain (angina), and other serious side effects.
